Cristiano Ronaldo says leaving Old Trafford early ‘sends a horrible message’ and ‘sets a horrible example’ as Manchester United say it’s ‘no problem’

Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo has been accused of ‘setting a horrible example’ by leaving Old Trafford at half-time in their friendly with Rayo Vallecano.

This despite the club saying they had ‘no problem’ with their talisman.

Ronaldo’s reputation at Old Trafford is in danger

Ronaldo – who intends to leave Man United – had made his first pre-season appearance on Sunday afternoon after missing training and the Red Devils summer tour due to family issues.

But, after missing 45 minutes, United’s talisman was then replaced by young striker Amad Diallo.

And he didn’t stay to watch his team in the second half.

Instead, footage on Twitter showed Ronaldo leaving the floor at half-time as his side drew 0-0, sending the Red Devils fan base into a frenzy online.

And ex-Liverpool star and Danny Murphy were unimpressed with the move.

Asked what he thought of Ronaldo’s first arc on Monday’s White and Jordan show, he replied: “Well, that doesn’t look good.

Ronaldo and his team didn’t have the best first-half performance before he left

“I don’t think whatever your grievances or whatever your name is, you should be doing this. I think that sends a horrible message and needs to be addressed.

Manchester United – who initially declined to comment – have since clarified they have no problem with Ronaldo leaving as he was one of several players to do so, according to Sky Sports.

However, Murphy believes that, in any case, the star shouldn’t risk causing controversy and risk setting bad precedents for others in the dressing room.

“You can’t let a player do that, it sets a horrible example,” he said.

Ronaldo tweeted after the game saying he was ‘happy to be back’

talkSPORT breakfast co-host Jamie O’Hara echoed Murphy’s opinion.

“He’s one of the greatest players of all time, but he always has to be part of a team and part of a team,” said the former Tottenham Hotspur player.

“If he was dragged at half-time and left, it’s not good. You can’t do that as a player.
