Cristiano Ronaldo did not miss Al-Nassr’s trip to Iran due to 99 lashes in the country for “adultery”, said the country’s embassy.
Ronaldo was a visible absence of the Al-Nassr team on Monday evening when they went to Esteghlal in the Iranian capital, Tehran, in the Asian Champions League.
It had previously been reported that Ronaldo would face 99 lashes in Iran after a meeting with a fan of the disabled in September 2023.
Ronaldo had welcomed the Iranian painter Fatima Hamimi with a hug and a kiss, but in doing so, broke the Iranian law, because touching a married woman is considered adultery.
However, a spokesperson for the Iranian embassy said that Ronaldo would have faced the whips – despite that he also missed his team’s trip to Persepolis in February.
“We firmly refuse the publication of any court decision against any international athlete in Iran,” said a spokesperson in Talksport.
