Ronaldo couldn’t have a huge impact on the game

After weeks of training away from Carrington, Ronaldo returned to the first team last week and played his first minutes for the club this summer in a friendly against Rayo Vallecano on Sunday.

The 37-year-old played just 45 minutes of the match, before leaving Old Trafford before the end of the game.

Afterwards, Ronaldo took to social media to send a message to United supporters, saying he was “happy to be back”.

However, only time will tell if the striker’s long-term future remains at Manchester.

For Erik ten Hag, the focus is on the club’s Premier League kick-off against Brighton this weekend.

While the rest of the United squad have enjoyed plenty of matches during the club’s pre-season campaign, the Dutch head coach believes Ronaldo still has some work to do to be ready for the new season.

Fans have welcomed Ronaldo, but ten Hag thinks he has a lot of work to do on his fitness

Speaking to Viaplay, ten Hag said: “It’s like before. We plan with him, he is in the group.

“I can not tell [how far away from Premier League fitness Ronaldo is].

“He’s definitely not at the level of the players in our team at the moment because he’s missed a lot of weeks.

“He needs games and he needs a lot of training.”
