Suede announced a plan of 7.7 million pounds sterling to modernize his civil defense bunkers after warning the Swedes to prepare for the risk of war. The Scandinavian country which shares a border with Russia has 64,000 of these bunkers. The space would be sufficient for seven million people, almost three -quarters of Sweden by 10.5 million inhabitants.
The country’s civil contingencies agency (MSB) would inspect shelters, some of whom can accommodate thousands of people. Bunkers offer protection against the explosion and heat waves triggered by a nuclear weapon as well as radioactive fallout, chemical or organic weapons gas and fragments of bombs.
MSB said Monday, April 1 that modernization work would take two to three years, with work already underway out of 25 of the 80 largest shelters.
Sweden’s action is involved in the midst of growing tensions during the war in Ukraine and doubts the commitment of US President Donald Trump to defend Europe.
In January, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Krissels said that his country “was not at war, but that there is no peace either” in the prospect of marking Sweden a year since he joined the Military Alliance of NATO.
KrisSSON promised to increase defense spending to 2.4% this year, going to 2.6% in three years while Sweden seeks to strengthen its armed forces after having reduced military spending after the end of the Cold War.
The authorities in Sweden reactivated the country’s “total defense” strategy in 2015 after the illegal annexation of Crimea Russia. He combines a civil and military defense action.
Meanwhile, the British Defense Ministry (MOD) announced today (April 1) that RAF fighter planes are upsetting Poland’s airspace on the eastern NATO side.
The Typhon jets built by British arrived in eastern Polish from Raf Lossiemouth on Tuesday to participate in an “improved air police mission”.
The MOD said that six British Squadron II (AC) typhoon hunting planes will be deployed alongside Swedish airforce Gripen.
Defense Minister Lord Coaker met his Polish counterpart Wladyslaw Marcin Kosiniak-Kamysz and Swedish Defense Minister Jonson on Tuesday to “describe the commitment of the United Kingdom to European security and to mark the start of the operation”.
Deployment has been the first time that Swedish fighter will participate in the air police in the territory of another NATO ally since Stockholm joined the Alliance last year.
In April 2024, six typhoon hunting planes with more than 200 staff members were stationed in Romania to defend the eastern border of NATO.
This was followed in August 2024 with the deployment of four F-35B jets in Iceland, defending NATO airspace in the North.
