Crews battle brush fire near Torrey Pines State Beach

Fire crews were battling a brush fire near Torrey Pines State Beach Tuesday afternoon, and police were evacuating nearby homes and closing two highway exits.

San Diego Fire officials said around 3:30 p.m. homes on Mango Drive were being evacuated. According to California Highway Patrol online logs, authorities requested that the southbound Interstate 5 off-ramps be closed at Del Mar Heights Road and Carmel Valley Road.

Three helicopters and a plane assigned to fight the fires were “making good progress” and the fire was about 5 to 7 acres, the department said on X, formerly Twitter.

A large plume of white smoke was visible for miles around.

Fire crews were initially on a 1-acre fire at the end of Del Mar Scenic Pkwy that started mid-morning. No structures were threatened and the fire was stopped.

Around 12:30 p.m., the department indicated on X that the fire had been brought under control thanks to drops from a firefighting helicopter and crews on the ground. “Very difficult and dense terrain,” the message said.

But as firefighters hosed down hot spots, a small fire broke out outside the fire lines, the department said on X shortly after 3 p.m. Officials said they were adding firefighting resources, including a fixed-wing aircraft and response teams.
