Cozy £100,000 hideaway inspired by JRR Tolkein’s Bilbo Baggins impresses at Chelsea Flower Show

Is it from Hobbiton? A cozy £100,000 hideaway inspired by JRR Tolkein’s Bilbo Baggins wows at the Chelsea Flower Show: a two-metre-high ‘hobbit hole’ makes the ultimate hideout complete with flat-screen TV and popcorn machine – and does not require any building permit

From the outside, it’s an enchanting haven for a hobbit inspired by JRR Tolkien’s Bilbo Baggins.

But step inside the quaint round doorway of the wooden creation that thrilled crowds at the Chelsea Flower Show last week and its true purpose is revealed.

The “hobbit-hole” is the ultimate teenage haunt with comfy beanbags, a giant TV and game console, plus a popcorn machine and candy stashes for snacks.

Next door is a tree house for young children with a rocking horse, teddy bears and an optional Narnia-inspired wardrobe leading to a slide.

Made by East Sussex-based Blue Forest, the tree house is priced at £150,000 and the hobbit house would cost you £100,000.

Despite the price, the bespoke lair was bought, with director Simon Payne saying it could have been sold six or seven times.

The company’s Magical Hideaway display won the show’s first five stars for a trade booth.

At two meters high, the hobbit hole is big enough for an adult to stand inside.

And unlike the treehouse, it doesn’t require planning permission — an application process that can sometimes take up to six months.

A spokesperson for Blue Forest said: “Designed like a playroom, you can imagine Bilbo Baggins waiting to greet you as you venture deep into the woods and come across the quirky circular door to this magical little hobbit house. “.

The company’s “Magical Hideaway” installation received five stars from the RHS, the highest honor for a commercial booth at the show.

Director Simon Payne said: “In all the years we’ve exhibited at Chelsea, I think it’s the best reaction we’ve ever had from anyone coming to see the hobbit house.”

“We were inspired by Tolkien’s stories and films. This kind of magic and fantasy is an integral part of what we do to keep children entertained in the garden.

“The tree house is for young children and the hobbit house for teenagers as a den.

“We’ve already done half a dozen hobbit house projects and sold this one, which we could have sold six or seven times over.”

It is believed that the English writer Tolkien was an avid gardener.

He described all manner of real and imagined trees, shrubs, flowers, and edible plants in his epic high-fantasy novels The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.

Peter Jackson, director of the film adaptations, set up a 12-acre film set in Matamata, New Zealand to portray Hobbiton, featuring Bilbo’s adorable hobbit hole.
