Lawyers representing the Trump administration agreed Tuesday to temporarily prevent the Elon Musk government’s efficiency department from accessing information on student loans and financial information after a group of the University of California has brought in federal legal action to interrupt actions.
This decision, approved by the American district judge Randolph D. Moss of the Columbia district, will be in place until Monday while the two parties prepare arguments in the case.
The decision marks at least a temporary setback for Musk’s Doge Associates, which President Trump has exploited to reduce the expenses of the federal government. The Democrats accuse the group – not a federal department despite its name – of making their way through government agencies.
DOGE is still working in the education service, but will be limited for less than a week to more than a dozen internal systems related to students’ data.
The concerns about DOGE actions have increased this week after education researchers and industry groups have indicated that more than 169 contracts and $ 900 million in spending have been reduced from the Institute of Educational Education of the department. The Institute follows the progress of American students through programs such as the national evaluation of education progress, known as the Bulletin de la Nation, and the Scorecard college, a cost and results database university.
A spokesperson for the department said on Tuesday that these programs would not be affected by the court’s decision.
The Assn. UC Student Assn., Who represents the undergraduate students on nine campuses, filed his trial on Friday. The pursuit alleges that the education department violates the 1974 privacy law, which largely prevents it from sharing personal information with third parties. The group asked the court to stop the affiliates of DOGE to students’ data.
Moss, appointed by President Obama, did not indicate Tuesday that he agreed with the student arguments.
The National Student Legal Defense Network and the Citizen Public Litigation Group, which represent the student association, said in a statement that they “look forward to putting a permanent end of these blatant violations. … millions of students still wonder if their personal information is in dangerous hands, and we need answers from the Ministry of Education to account for data already raped. »»

The costume comes as tensions increase on the future of the department, which grants billions of subsidies to school programs from kindergarten to 12th year and administers more than $ 1.5 billion of federal student loans for 43 million Americans. Trump undertook to eliminate the department and said last week that he wanted his candidate to the Secretary of Education, Linda McMahon, to “put himself out of a job”. The confirmation hearing of the McMahon Senate is scheduled for Thursday.
