The Trump administration freezes $ 790 million in federal funding at the Northwestern University and more than a billion dollars in funding at Cornell University, a White House official told CNN.
“The money has been frozen in the context of several in progress, credible and concerning Title VI investigations,” said a Trump administration official, referring to a federal law that prohibits discrimination in programs and activities that receive federal funding.
The New York Times reportedly reported freezing on the financing of the Northwestern and Cornell.
This decision adds to similar actions that the administration has taken against several elite universities, which is requiring modifications to their programs of diversity, equity and inclusion, that is to say their treatment of protests against war in Gaza.
Cornell is “aware of media reports” on the financing freezing, but has not received information that would confirm the figure of $ 1 billion, he said in a statement. However, the university has received “more than 75 arrest working orders from the Ministry of Defense linked to deeply important research for American national defense, cybersecurity and health”.
“We are actively looking for information from federal officials to find out more on the basis of these decisions,” said the press release, adding that he “worked with diligence to create an environment where all individuals and points of view are protected and respected”.
In a statement to CNN, the Northwestern University said that it had also found the freeze for media funding and had “received no official notification from the federal government”.
“The federal funds that Northwestern receives stimulate innovative and vital research, such as the recent development by northwest researchers of the smallest cardiac stimulator in the world, and research fueling the fight against Alzheimer’s disease,” said the press release. “This type of research is now in Jeopardy. The university has completely cooperated with surveys by the Ministry of Education and Congress. ”
On March 14, the Office of the Ministry of Education for Civil Rights, announced that it had opened investigations on Title VI on 45 universities, which underlined it “reiterated” the “obligations of civil rights to end the use of racial preferences and stereotypes in education programs and activities”.
Last Friday, Harvard University received a letter describing policy requests to maintain $ 9 billion in federal funding. Some of the requests included the elimination of Harvard’s diversity, equity and inclusion programs and a ban on masks during campus demonstrations, the newspaper managed by students reported, The Harvard Crimson and other points of sale.
Brown University also learned last week that $ 510 million in subsidies were in danger while the Trump administration examined the policies of diversity, equity and inclusion of the university and its response to anti -Semitism.
Princeton University and Columbia University have also undergone funding losses in recent weeks.
On Tuesday, the American trade department announced that Princeton University would lose nearly $ 4 million in federal funding for climate research programs.
The financing cuts, linked to an examination of the subsidies of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, reflect the efforts of the administration to reduce support for the programs which, according to them, do not align with its priorities. They come after the announcement of the administration last week that she suspended research subsidies totaling $ 210 million at Princeton University as part of an ongoing investigation into anti -Semitism on campus.
The revocation of funding has let universities walk on egg shells, desperate to keep essential funding. Students of the University of Columbia report a hunted mood on campus after being at the center of the scene in the Multiple Wrestling of the Trump administration against demonstrations in colleges across the country last year, including expulsion efforts against certain international students who participated in the demonstrations.
