Cops at Rahul Gandhi’s Remark About Sexual Assault Survivors

Senior Delhi Police officers reached Rahul Gandhi’s residence today in connection with his remark ‘women are still sexually assaulted’ during the all-India ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ march. Police had issued a notice to the Congress leader on March 16 asking for details of the women who had approached him about sexual harassment. The police team led by Special Police Commissioner (Law and Order) Sagar Preet Hooda stood outside Mr Gandhi’s residence at 12 Tughlaq Lane for more than an hour before the MP for Wayanad don’t meet them. The police team then left and Mr Gandhi was seen leaving his house, driving a car, shortly afterwards.

Rahul Gandhi reportedly told police that the Bharat Jodo Yatra was long and he doesn’t remember anything. The police then served him another notice and said that his statement would be recorded. However, they did not give a fixed timeline for this.

Calling it a “disgraceful act”, Congress said it showed Prime Minister Narendra Modi was nervous over their questions on the Adani issue.

Top Congress leaders including Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and Rajya Sabha MPs Abhishek Manu Singhvi and Jairam Ramesh also reached Gandhi’s residence. Several members of Congress who gathered at the former party chairman’s home to protest against the police presence were arrested by the police.

Delhi Police said they want to know the details of these Rahul Gandhi wives so that legal action can be taken. Senior police officials wanted to speak to Mr Gandhi to get information about the women involved.

Congressional sources say there is no legal precedent for the opinion being issued against Rahul Gandhi based on either suo motu or a complaint. Congress leader Pawan Khera asked why the police were asking this question 45 days after the end of the Yatra. The government is “nervous”, he added.
