Copa America referee collapses in frightening scene during Canada-Peru match before being stretched on stretcher with heat index above 100 degrees

An official at the Copa America match between Canada and Peru collapsed in a frightening scene in Kansas City.

Guatemalan assistant referee Humberto Panjoj was taken off on a stretcher after Canadian goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau urgently called paramedics to rush to the man’s aid. In an encouraging sign, he got up before being placed on a stretcher.

“The second assistant referee fell to the ground,” wrote Luis Miguel Echegaray of ESPN on is busy at the moment.

The heat index in Kansas City was above 100 degrees Fahrenheit during the first half of Tuesday’s game.
