Construction worker directing traffic in Valley Center killed in suspected hit-and-run

A 37-year-old construction worker directing traffic was fatally struck by a vehicle that then fled the scene in Valley Center Monday morning, according to a California Highway Patrol official.

Dispatchers received a call around 7 a.m. about the crash on Cool Valley Road, east of Cole Grand Road, according to Officer Hunter Gerber.

A construction flagger, directing traffic near a construction site, was struck by a Toyota Corolla, Gerber said. The sedan fled before the police arrived.

Emergency services transported the construction worker to hospital, where he died. His name has been withheld pending notification of his family.

Around 4:30 p.m. Thursday, CHP officers located the suspected driver of the Toyota. He was booked into the Vista Jail on several charges, including hit-and-run.

It is unclear whether alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash. The cause of the accident was under investigation.
