But these objects were also taken away by the colonizers, and are still on display in museum galleries far from home.
In recent years, museums around the world have had to deal with the looted treasures they have kept and profited from.
Today, a small museum in Nashville, Tennessee, is restoring ancient artifacts discovered in Mexico.
