Conor Gallagher’s impressive opener was ruled out by a spectacular late own goal as Brighton and Crystal Palace drew 1-1 at the Amex Stadium on Friday night.

Gallagher’s goal sparked incredible celebrations away from home, but eventually the home fans had the last laugh.

Gallagher celebrated his goal emphatically

In the first half, Brighton were twice denied a first game in a mad spell in which they missed a penalty and were disallowed a goal.

Pascal Gross’ tame attempt from the point was turned away by Palace goalkeeper Jack Butland after Joel Veltman was found guilty of being fouled by Will Hughes from a corner following interference from the VAR.

Roaming Palace fans, who blasted a flare onto the pitch before Gross’ kick, had barely finished celebrating the save when Neal Maupay put the ball into the net moments later.

Referee Robert Jones was again called to the field monitor and later ruled that Maupay had taken the ball out of Butland’s hands.

It was desperation for Brighton as they lost 1-0

Palace took the lead in the 69th minute through Gallagher, sending the opposing side into a frenzy.

The on-loan Chelsea midfielder powerfully netted his seventh Premier League goal of the season in the right corner after Jeffrey Schlupp removed the ball.

Jamie Carragher reacted: “It’s what you call ‘scenes’, ‘members’ in that far end.

“I’ve said it before, in a big rivalry, you don’t care how you get the points, how well you perform.

“How often do you see that in his career? The right place at the right time and it’s a fantastic finish.

In the end, Brighton got a deserved run

“To just have the nerve to find that far corner.

“With Conor Gallagher, we are looking at one of the best midfielders this season.”

Brighton equalized three minutes from time.

Maupay worked his way into the box past Joel Ward and his cross was inadvertently turned into his own net by Palace defender Joachim Andersen.

There were no further goals despite late pressure from the hosts and the match ended 1-1.
