Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Sharad Pawar said on Monday that Congress’ request to appoint one of its leaders to lead the opposition would be valid as it is the only party with a maximum number of deputies.

“The party that has the maximum number of deputies can demand the post of LoP. According to my information, Congress currently has the maximum number and if they ask for it, it is a valid request,” Pawar said.

Speaking about the ideology of Ajit Pawar and the other eight leaders who left the NCP for the BJP, Sharad Pawar said, “Many from there (Ajit Pawar’s side) called me and said that most of them are still with the original NCP ideology/policies and they will declare their position at the right time.

“I haven’t called anyone to show strength here. Sometimes your strength increases and sometimes it decreases. I had faced this earlier also in 1980 where out of my 59 MPs only 5 remained but I campaigned for my party and those who left the party lost in the next elections,” he added.

Following the defection of nephew Ajit Pawar and eight other leaders, the NCP leader said he never worried about who left and who stayed. “Today during my tour, about 80% of the total number of people who came to meet me were young people. These youths will work for secular ideology and strengthen Maharashtra with whatever it takes,” he said.

Ajit Pawar and Chhagan Bhujbal along with Dilip Patil, Hasan Mushrif, Dhananjay Mundo, Dharmaraobaba Atram, Aditi Tatkare, Sanjay Bansode and Anil Patil joined the Maharashtra government led by Eknath Shinde-Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Praful Patel was also fired by Sharad Pawar yesterday for ‘anti-party activities’.

“I am writing to you urgently to inform you that two MPs, Praful Patel and Sunil Tatkare… engaged in anti-party activities by facilitating and directing the swearing in of nine MPs as Cabinet Ministers of the Maharashtra,” Supriya Sule wrote to Sharad Pawar.
