Concord Dev confirms monetization via cosmetics only

Concord, the PS5 and PC shooter developed by PlayStation subsidiary Firewalk Studios, will follow Helldivers 2’s monetization model. That means it’ll cost you $40/£35 up front, then it’ll try to persuade players to spend more money on cosmetic items. Everyone expected this to be the case, but now we have confirmation from the developer himself.

“There are purely cosmetic items that you can choose to purchase to further customize your character’s appearance. These do not affect gameplay. We strongly believe that the full experience should be available to all of our players. ” Director of Intellectual Property Kim Kreines told VGC.

In turn, the model should allow Firewalk Studios to support Concord in the long term. Kreines reveals that “new maps, new modes, and new characters” will be added over time, as well as additions to the game’s “unfolding story.”

Of course, this type of monetization worked very well for Helldivers 2, but it’s also an incredibly popular release. Neither game is free-to-play, so the companies involved are make money up front — but we all know what happens when a live service title struggles to maintain a healthy number of players.
