Component shortage no longer a problem for Switch successor, Nintendo says

At Nintendo’s recent shareholders meeting, president Shuntaro Furukawa addressed a topic that will undoubtedly occupy the minds of gamers everywhere as we get closer to the reveal of the Switch’s successor: scalpers.

Last year, Nintendo had already expressed interest in reducing the number of scalping incidents related to new hardware by simply ensuring that the company “produced and shipped in sufficient numbers to meet customer demand.” At the shareholders’ meeting in June this year, Furukawa reiterated this wish, but crucially indicated that the component shortage problem that has hit the gaming industry in recent years apparently no longer affects Nintendo .

In a translation via IGN, Furukawa said the following:

“Although we were unable to produce enough Nintendo Switch hardware last year and the year before due to a shortage of semiconductor components, this situation has now been resolved. At this time, we do not believe that the component shortage will have a significant impact on the production of the successor model.”

So this is good news for those hoping to get their hands on the console on day one (whenever that may be). If there’s one thing that defined the PS5 and Xbox Series X launches in 2020, it’s that no one could get their hands on the damn things for months, with new restocks being stolen by customers (and resellers) in mere minutes.

If Nintendo can produce enough units of the Switch successor to meet demand and complement that with a solid launch lineup of games, then we think the company will be on the right track.
