CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (CBS Boston) – The five-day workweek is as American as apple pie, but in recent years it has been called into question. Turning the weekend into a three day period is something that has been stirred by some experts and even the subject of various studies. Today, a company claims that giving their employees an extra day off has saved them even more money.
In May 2020, Dockwa, a marinas booking app that connects boaters and marinas across the country, abolished the dreaded Monday workday. It doesn’t look like they’ll be back on this road anytime soon. “We wanted to combat employee burnout,” says Jessica Palmer, vice president of personnel operations. “We realized that the state of the world was changing, and we really wanted to make sure our people were there, that they stayed happy.

The start-up has offices in Cambridge, Massachusetts and Newport, Rhode Island. They say that since the change to a four-day work week, the numbers speak for themselves. “What we found was that the year after implementing the change, we saw almost 100% year-over-year growth in ARR, that is, – say income. We were able to do this despite a reduced number of hours, ”explains Meghan Anderson, Director of Marketing.
“I don’t see a world where I could really go back to a five-day work week,” adds Austin Schofield, Marina Success Manager.
Pay and time off have not been affected for the 50 Dockwa employees, who have been noticeably happier and more productive while on the job. “Dive right into Tuesday and having that week compressed really allows you to stay a lot more focused and optimize your time and function more efficiently,” says Schofield.

While Dockwa helps its customers enjoy the outdoors, it’s something their employees can do more now with more time off. “Being able to sort of walk with your own employees and allow them to shut down their devices, to log off, to get out into the world, I think that bodes well for the values of the company,” says Anderson.
The model also attracted new employees to work there.
“I started at the company in February of last year and it was a major factor in my choice of position. I am a parent, I have a four year old daughter. Having Monday off allows me to have just a little time for my sanity, ”adds Anderson.

“We can make life. Whether it’s participating in activities on a weekday that we couldn’t before, or really focusing on our well-being so that we can get back to work 100%, ”says Palmer.
