After two years of poorly received hosts, actress Nikki Glaser has announced she will host the 82nd Golden Globes.

In recent years, Golden Globes hosts have made headlines for stirring up controversy rather than laughter. In 2023, American comedian Jerrod Carmichael said, “I’ll tell you why I’m here: I’m here because I’m black.” In 2024, media outlets and social media users lambasted host Jo Koy for a series of jokes that failed to resonate with the Hollywood A-list audience, with Vanity Fair describing her as a “near total disaster.”

For next year’s show, a change of direction appears to be underway.

“I am absolutely thrilled to be hosting the Golden Globes,” Glaser wrote in a statement, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s one of my favorite nights on TV, and now I have a front row seat (in fact, I think I have to host from the stage). The Golden Globes are not only a big night for television and film, but also for comedy. It’s one of the rare times that show business not only allows itself, but encourages itself to be lovingly mocked (at least, I hope so). (God, I hope so.) It’s an exciting gig, but also a challenging one, because it’s live, unpredictable, and in front of Hollywood’s biggest stars (who might also get wasted sitting next to their recent exes).”

The comedian, who made her name as a celebrity critic, vowed she would try to be a worthy successor to some of the most beloved hosts of the past.

“Some of my all-time favorite jokes have come from past Golden Globes opening monologues, when Tina (Fey) or Amy (Poehler) or Ricky (Gervais) have said exactly what we all didn’t know we desperately needed to hear,” she said. “I just hope to continue that time-honored tradition (which could also get me canceled). It’s truly a dream job. Plus, I no longer have to feel guilty about every TV show and movie I’ve watched in the past year. It was all worth it. (Below Deck: Sailing Yacht season 4 will be nominated, right?)”

Comedian Ricky Gervais, who has hosted the show five times in the past, made headlines in 2020 for his scathing monologue in which he called celebrities hypocrites.

“You say you’re woke, but the companies you work for in China are incredible. Apple, Amazon, Disney. If ISIS launched a streaming service, you’d call your agent, right?” he said.

GOLDEN GLOBES 2024: COMPLETE LIST OF WINNERS

Golden Globes chairwoman Helen Hoehne touted Glaser as a solid choice who will entertain the audience all night long.

“Nikki Glaser is a talented comedian whose bold, unfiltered humor is the perfect complement to the Golden Globes. She is sure to bring a unique energy and spontaneity to the show that will keep audiences entertained all night long,” she said.

Jay Penske, chairman and CEO of Dick Clark Productions and Penske Media Corporation, said that “Glaser’s unapologetic style made her an obvious and compelling choice to host this year’s event. We hope this will be the first of many Golden Globes where Nikki surprises and delights our CBS audience, as well as audiences around the world.”
