Colorado police officers help deliver triplets with help of common kitchen item after screaming mother gives birth on neighbor’s porch

Four Colorado police officers helped deliver a series of triples in the snow – with the help of a common kitchen item – after rushing to the aid of a woman screaming from a neighbor’s porch early in the month.

Greeley Police Department officers found the 24-year-old mother in labor on April 18, more than three months earlier, in front of the home and quickly sprang into action, authorities said and the boy friend of the woman.

As officers quickly called medics, they heard “very faint” moans and saw that a baby boy had been born but was turning blue, police said.

An officer found bread ties nearby to help secure the umbilical cord while another officer quickly collected towels and blankets to keep the mother warm as a mix of snow and rain fell around 3:30 a.m. in the morning.

A third officer tied off the umbilical cord and cut it, while the fourth officer carried the newborn to his patrol car to keep him warm in the 32-degree morning temperature, police said.

But once the baby reached the vehicle, he stopped breathing, leading the officer to administer CPR and chest compressions so that he would have “a chance of survival” until paramedics arrived. paramedics and take over, Greeley police said Friday.

A second baby boy was then born while officers tended to the mother and waited for further help. The umbilical cord was cut and baby number two was taken away in an ambulance while doctors were still working on the first child.

Another ambulance eventually arrived at the home and took the mother to the hospital where she underwent surgery and delivered the last baby – also a boy, police said.

“Officers were excited to learn that all three babies had strong heartbeats and were being cared for in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU),” Greeley Police said. “We believe the woman went into labor while home alone, but her phone had died so she attempted to go to a neighbor’s house to call 911.”

The triplets’ father, Eric Mayeda, introduced the three boys as Burt Isao Leonard-Mayeda, Kikutaro Alan Leonard-Mayeda and Billy Bob Leonard-Mayeda on social media.

“They were early, which was expected, but everyone is fine and as healthy as can be expected,” he said on Facebook alongside photos of the little babies at the hospital. NICU.

Mayeda told McClatchy News that his girlfriend, Tiffany Leonard, was staying at her mother’s house when she went into labor early in the morning. With her phone cut off, she walked to her neighbors’ house a block away, where they woke up and called 911, he said.

“Your babies are born on my porch!” Mayeda said neighbors called and told him.

The triplets’ original due date was July 25, he told the outlet.

Police Chief Adam Turk praised the officers for their efforts.

“We expect our officers to do a great job in our community every day, this is anchored (sic) in our core values,” Turk said in a statement. “Even with these high expectations, I was amazed at the teamwork, ingenuity and care our officers provided to this mother and her three new babies.

“The success of this appeal is a success for our officers, our training and our partnerships with other public safety agencies in the region.”
