Colombia cuts diplomatic relations with Israel amid Gaza war

BOGOTÁ, Colombia — Colombian President Gustavo Petro announced Wednesday that his government will suspend diplomatic ties with Israel, its longtime defense ally, making Colombia the largest country to sever ties amid the war in Gaza.

Petro, Colombia’s first left-wing president, called the Israeli government and president “genocidal.”

“If Palestine dies, humanity dies, and we will not let it die,” Petro said during a Labor Day celebration in the country’s capital’s crowded Bolivar Square.
