College football programs get off to a flying start for 2022 season as DU and CU climb into top 20 – The Denver Post

Colorado continues to be a hotbed for football. The college scene is no different.

On Tuesday, United Soccer Coaches’ NCAA Division I poll was released and there was movement in the table for a pair of programs.

The University of Denver men’s stock soared with a 14-place jump to the No. 6 team in the nation. The Pioneers (3-0-1) were pre-season Summit League favorites but took a big step forward last week with a solid East Coast trip that included a 2-0 victory over the then-No. 9 Maryland and a 1-1 draw against then-No. 19 Georgetown on Monday in the nation’s capital.

It’s the first time the Pioneers have made the top 10 since the 2018 season. The program’s highest ranking is No. 3, which was hit in 2017.

Ronan Wynne, a junior outside back, was named to College Soccer News’ Football Team of the Week, while Cole’s brother Sam Bassett was named the conference’s Offensive Performer of the Week as he now counts up to three goals and one assist in 2022. .

DU will complete its five-game road trip to Southern California against UC San Diego and San Diego State before returning home on Friday, September 16.

The burning offensive of buffs continues. On the women’s side, the Buffaloes continued their ascent to start 2022 as they went undefeated. CU (5-0-1) moved up one spot to No. 19 in the United Soccer Coaches Week 3 poll and broke into the top 20 for the first time since 2019.

Colorado has the best offense in the nation averaging 4.33 goals per game this season. The Buffs beat Division I opponents 26-3 (31 total goals, including a 6-0 win over Texas A&M-Commerce, which is transitioning to a full D1 program). Junior Shyra James is tied for the nation’s top scorer (eight goals), while Rachel Rosen has a team-best four assists.

CU will also hit the road this week with a pair of games against previously ranked Big Ten foes Michigan and Michigan State. The Buffs’ next home game is against state rivals DU (2-3-1) at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 17 at Prentup Field.
