Cockroaches and poor handling of raw meat in Myrtle Beach’s worst restaurant inspections

Cockroaches, flies and other insects were found at a Myrtle Beach area restaurant, among other violations discovered at Grand Strand restaurants.

The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control regularly inspects restaurants in Horry County and the Myrtle Beach area for health violations, and its reports are current as of May 29, 2024.

These restaurants received the worst ratings.

National House of Crepes

Address: 211 North Kings Highway in Myrtle Beach

Score: 79 percent

SCDHEC inspected the Maison Nationale de la Crêpe on May 23, 2024 and found several violations. The report found cockroaches, flies and insects in the kitchen, as well as containers and equipment that were soiled and covered in filth.

SCDHEC also found that the kitchen ceiling was missing tiles and the walls were covered in grease. Among other violations, SCDHEC found, the report said National Pancake House found cardboard used as shelf liner that was dirty and food stored on the floor.

Despite the initial 79 percent rating, SCDHEC returned to the National Crepe House on May 28, 2024, and the restaurant received a 100 percent rating during the follow-up inspection.

Score: 84 percent

SCDHEC inspected the Athena on May 22, 2024 and found several violations. In addition to the lack of towels provided at the sink, SCDHEC also noted small flies and a leaking three-compartment sink.

SCDHEC also discovered chemicals improperly placed next to a three-compartment sink. The agency’s inspection concluded that Athena must undergo a follow-up on-site inspection within 10 days.

Location: 500 Highway 17 North in North Myrtle Beach

Score: 84 percent

SCDHEC inspected the TGI location Friday in North Myrtle Beach on May 20, 2024 and found violations, primarily involving the restaurant’s dishwashing equipment, specifically its dishwasher. Dishwashing is the process by which restaurants clean their dishes and utensils.

The SCDHEC inspection found that the dishwasher was not working properly; the pressure gauge needle was broken, the internal parts were in poor condition and dirty and accumulated inside.

TGI Friday issue 745 must undergo a follow-up on-site inspection within 10 days, the SCDHEC report concludes.
