Coca-Cola 600 is under weather delay due to lightning

UPDATE: NASCAR has cleared the lightning and is drying the track at Charlotte Motor Speedway as they work to prepare the track for the resumption of the Coca-Cola 600.

The Coca-Cola 600 NASCAR Cup Series race is subject to a weather delay due to lightning and rain after 249 of 400 laps at Charlotte Motor Speedway on Sunday.

A system was installed in the Charlotte Motor Speedway area near Concord, North Carolina. The caution flag was waved for rain on lap 247, with a flash hold forcing a red flag laps later.

Christopher Bell leads the race with 151 laps to go. A lightning strike requires a minimum of 30 minutes of waiting without another lightning strike, but rain is also present and floods the race track.

Kyle Larson drove to Charlotte Motor Speedway and was preparing to get in the car when the race was halted, and he will likely be in the No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet if racing resumes. Larson finished 18th at the Indy 500, which was delayed four hours due to weather. Justin Allgaier drove the No. 5 Chevrolet and is currently 13th.

Since the driver change will take place under the red flag, Larson will have to start from the back on the next restart, if that happens.
