When Chatgpt entered the scene for the first time, I rolled my eyes.
As an admissions to the university and author of “Get Real and Get in”, I have always believed in the power of deep reflection and authentic narration. The idea of using AI looked like a shortcut that eliminated the most precious part of the process: helping students discover their unique voices.
Everything has changed with a student.
He was brilliant, but his first drafts were jerky, blurred and thin. He had trouble getting his ideas on paper and deadlines have turned off. Then, suddenly, polite tests appeared in my reception box. They were formal but well structured. An AI detector confirmed my suspicions: 100% generated by AI.
I was furious – not only to the student, but to the idea that AI could undermine the very foundation of my work. I sent him an email in severe warning that we would not be able to support his work unless he keeps using AI.
On his credit, he listened. He canceled the projects generated by AI and worked harder to infuse his personality in his writing. He ended up producing tests that presented his intellectual depth and his unique perspective. And guess what? He entered his dream school – an Ivy League.
This experience forced me to rethink my position. I wondered: I was resisting AI because it threatened my role – or because I hadn’t learned to guide students about how to use it?
After having experienced the generator in my own workflow – using the answers by e -mail and the deadlines of the project – I saw its potential for rationalization of the processes. This inspired me to integrate AI to make the admission process less overwhelming.
AI could be a relief of stress for students who apply in college
As a person who works in close collaboration with high school students, I know of the first hand how the process of admission to college can be stressful. I saw stressful students and sometimes get completely withdrawn from the process because it’s just too much.
