New co-op shooter The First Descendent appears to be a smash hit on Steam in terms of players, but it launched to overall “mixed” reviews from users.
The First Descendent is a brand new third-person shooter, launching today as a free-to-play game on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X. On PC in particular, the shooter appears to have been a stellar launch for developer Nexon Games, having rocketed straight to the top of Steam’s bestseller charts just hours after launch.
What has it dethroned at the top of this ranking, you ask? Why, only Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, the gargantuan DLC expansion to FromSoftware’s critically acclaimed and widely beloved 2022 RPG. Shadow of the Erdtree launched over a week ago at this point, so it’s worth noting, but it’s still a pretty fantastic feat from a brand new game like The First Descendent.
But it’s not all rosy for this third-person shooter. After over 4,100 user reviews on Steam, The First Descendent currently has a “mixed” overall rating, after only 43% of players gave it a positive rating. The large amount of negative user reviews is unfortunately scathing of the shooter’s microtransactions.
“I bought the Calibers pack, the money was written off, but there is no Caliber, WTF???,” one user wrote in the comments, while another added: “I bought Caliber for the Battle Pass but never got it, Steam payment went through but nothing in the game.” Caliber is The First Descendent’s microtransaction currency, with which players can obtain cosmetic items, such as brand new outfits for characters, or pay to level up their characters.
On Nexon’s website, however, the developer states that it is well aware of the delays players are experiencing when purchasing Calibre. “When purchasing multiple items through the PlayStation Store shopping cart, there may be a delay in the items being delivered to your inventory,” Nexon writes, omitting any mention of issues on PC.
Otherwise, a good number of players really enjoy the looting and shooting of The First Descendent. “This is a really good game if Destiny and Warframe had a baby together, this would be the baby,” writes one positive reviewer. “The game is grindy, just like Destiny, but it looks better. There are a lot more enemy types and the skills are fun. You’re not locked into minimum classes, but you have a lot of variety depending on how many Descendents you unlock,” adds another.
It’s a rough launch for The First Descendent on Steam, but the shooter’s status atop the bestseller charts indicates that it at least has a player base.
