CMS student dies, 2 Charlotte Catholic students in intensive care after crash near Asheville
A CMS student died along with two local students at Asheville Hospital after an accident Sunday morning.
Charlotte Catholic posted on social media that two students from the school were in the Asheville intensive care unit after a car accident. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol confirmed to Channel 9 that two people died in the crash.
Sophie Gordon, 16, of Charlotte, and Robert Fox, of Wilmette, Illinois, died in the crash.
Gordon was a junior at Myers Park, the school announced Sunday.
“We are deeply saddened to inform you that Sophie Gordon, a junior at MPHS, was one of the deceased passengers,” the statement said. “We are praying for Sophie’s family and friends during this very difficult time.”

The North Carolina Department of Transportation alerted Channel 9 of a crash on I-40 near Asheville around 3 a.m. Sunday, saying the road would be closed until 10 a.m. NCSHP says the accident happened around 11:30 p.m.
A 2015 Volvo passenger car was traveling east on I-40 when the driver attempted to exit. The vehicle was traveling too fast and lost control, left the left side of the road and struck a tree, according to police.
Six teenagers were in the vehicle at the time of the accident. Two were killed, two were transported to a local hospital in critical condition, and the driver and another passenger were transported to a local hospital with minor injuries. Police say no charges have been filed at this time.

Charlotte Catholic students held a prayer service Sunday evening to pray for the two CCHS juniors involved in the accident.

Myers Park said a crisis intervention team will be available Monday for students who need emotional support following this tragedy. Advisors will also be highly visible throughout the building.
