Among the inevitable jokes from rivals, Specsavers also joined in the teasing, with the opticians tweeting: “Tip for Everton fans: close your eyes.”

For Everton, despite Demarai Gray taking a late consolation penalty, there is clearly plenty of work to do ahead of Friday night’s FA Cup third round clash with Manchester United at Old Trafford.
