Cleveland police officer shot dead in Hough neighborhood

CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) – A Cleveland police officer was fatally shot on the city’s east side Thursday morning.

Cleveland Police Chief Dorothy Todd said the 27-year-old officer was shot in the 1500 block of East 80th Street around 1 a.m. It’s in the city’s Hough neighborhood.

According to Chief Todd, several officers went to the area to serve an arrest warrant on a man wanted for felonious assault.

Upon arrival, the suspect was seen leaving a home on a bicycle. As he attempted to stop him, Chief Todd said the suspect fired shots, hitting the officer.

The officer’s name has not been released at this time.

Chief Todd said the officer had been with the department for four years and was assigned to the Third District.

“They need to be recognized as the heroes that they are,” Chief Todd said.

A 24-year-old man is in custody. Once he has been formally charged, his name will be released.

Chief Todd added that the suspect was not injured, but was taken to the hospital as a “precautionary measure.”

“I ask the people of Cleveland to pray for this family and for the men and women of our police department,” said Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb.
