- I tried and classified cheeseburgers from five fast food chains.
- The channels included McDonald’s, Burger King, Wendy’s, Sonic Drive-in and Checkers.
- Sonic Drive-in and the verifiers impressed me with their large but cheap.
No menu item is as emblematic as a fast food cheeseburger, and each chain makes theirs differently.
McDonald’s has served cheeseburgers since its foundation in 1940, and its most basic cheeseburger remains one of the cheapest items on the menu.
In an effort to offer better value, other channels have reinforced their most basic cheeseburger offers with larger pancakes and garnishes with tomatoes, red onion and grated lettuce.
I tried and classified cheeseburgers from five main channels: McDonald’s, Burger King, Wendy’s, Sonic Drive-in and Checkers.
All the burgers were slightly different. However, there was a clear winner in terms of taste and value.
Here’s how five classified fast food cheeseburgers, from the worst to the best.
McDonald’s had my least favorite cheeseburger.
Erin McDowell / Business Insider
The most fundamental cheeseburger at McDonald’s costs $ 3.49, excluding taxes and costs, at my local McDonald’s in Brooklyn, New York.
The cheeseburger came with a single cake of beef, pickles, chopped onions, ketchup, mustard and a slice of American cheese.

The cheeseburger had a handful of diced onions at the bottom of the pancake and inside the lower bread. The cheese made the hamburger pancake and the upper bun glue together, sandwiching the other ingredients inside.
It didn’t bother me the cheeseburger, but it was not my favorite.
Erin McDowell / Business Insider
Overall, it was a good snack but not generous enough to satisfy me for a full meal. I also thought that the bun was a bit flavorless and the cheese could have been more melted.
The condiments also mastered the taste of hamburger – this cheeseburger has really tasted only cheese and ketchup for me, while the bun made me feel a little dry.
I didn’t really taste onions, even if I thought the pickles were tart and crisp.
Burger King’s basic cheeseburger was the next one.
Erin McDowell / Business Insider
The cheeseburger cost $ 2.79, excluding tax and costs, in a Burger king in Brooklyn, New York. It was the cheapest hamburger I tried.
The hamburger came with American cheese, pickles, ketchup and mustard on a bread of sesame seeds.
Erin McDowell / Business Insider
This hamburger seemed to be just a bigger touch than the McDonald’s hamburger. The cheese was also more melted.
Although this hamburger has fewer fillings, it was tastier.
Erin McDowell / Business Insider
I thought the addition of diced onion and mustard on the McDonald’s hamburger did not do much to amplify the flavor, and I found this hamburger much tastier.
The bun had a distinct sesame flavor, and the beef pancake had a slight smoke that had a fresh taste out of grill.
The cheese was thick and perfectly melted on the hamburger pancake, something that I did not experience with the McDonald’s hamburger. For its low price, I thought that this hamburger was a good value.
Wendy’s unique cheeseburger landed downright in the middle.
Erin McDowell / Business Insider
While Wendy’s offers a variety of different, large and small hamburgers, Dave’s single is the most classic cheeseburger in the chain. Appointed according to the founder of Wendy, Dave Thomas, he is available in several sizes, from a single to a Triple hamburger.
It presents one of the square pancakes of Wendy in the shape of a square and is the version of the chain of a conventional cheeseburger.
This cost $ 8.74, excluding taxes and costs at My Local Wendy’s in Brooklyn, New York. It was the most expensive hamburger I tried.
The hamburger has coated with condiments and garnishes.
Erin McDowell / Business Insider
The unique cheeseburger of the DAVE is delivered with a quarter -book cake, a slice of American cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, ketchup, mayo and onions.
When I lifted the hamburger’s bun, there were practically flowed sauces, which I didn’t necessarily care. There was also a generous portion of pickles and a large slice of tomato.
I thought that the hamburger was tasty, but the condiments slightly mastered the other ingredients.
Erin McDowell / Business Insider
Next time, I could remove mayonnaise or ask for half a point to reduce how wet the burger.
I thought the fillings had a fresh taste and it was a good size. However, I did not know if it was worth the high price.
The ladies came in second place.
Erin McDowell / Business Insider
The cheese champion, which is the most basic cheeseburger to drop out, cost $ 6.49, excluding tax and costs, at the place I visited in Brooklyn, New York.
The hamburger came loaded with garnishes.
Erin McDowell / Business Insider
The hamburger had a cake and was garnished with American cheese, tomato, red onion, lettuce, pickles, ketchup, mustard and mayonnaise. It was served on a toasted “bakery” bread.
The hamburger was large and juicy. I thought it was great value.
Erin McDowell / Business Insider
The ladies served one of the biggest burgers I tried, and I thought it was also relatively affordable to just under $ 7. The hamburger toppings were fresh, especially the tomato in thick slices and the Iceberg lettuce.
I thought that the cheese and the beef cake were both tasty, and the hamburger had the perfect amount of condiments to add humidity and flavor without making it too soggy.
My only complaint was with the bun, which I thought was a little too thick and shy compared to the softer bun of Sonic.
Overall, I was impressed.
My favorite cheeseburger came from Sonic Drive-In.
Erin McDowell / Business Insider
The Sonic Cheeseburger cost $ 8.04, excluding tax and costs during my local drive-in Sonic in Brooklyn, New York.
The hamburger came with a slice of cheese, pickles, tomatoes, lettuce, dice onion, mayonnaise and ketchup.
Erin McDowell / Business Insider
There was a generous portion of each garnish, and they were uniformly in layers through the hamburger cake to ensure that each bite had an equal amount of all the ingredients.
I thought it was a great classic cheeseburger, and I would order it again.
Erin McDowell / Business Insider
Although it was not the cheapest hamburger, I thought it was a great value given its size and the quantity of flavor packed there.
The beef was juicy but well seasoned, the cheese added the perfect quantity of flavor, the pickles and the tomato were fresh and added a tart crunch with each bite, and the soft bun maintained everything together.
Although Sonic’s Hamburger is similar enough to Checkers, I preferred the most expensive option only for its flavor. He simply had a cooler taste and better overall.
The next time I stop for a classic fast food cheeseburger, I will stop at Sonic Drive-in.
