Cities Skylines 2 Steam Reviews Rise as CO Works Hard on Updates

Here we are, finally here. More than 8 months have passed since Urban Horizons 2 After Cities Skylines 2’s release to collective dismay, even frustration, among its loyal players, it seems that the big change is underway. Like looking at the information panel to gauge the happiness of your Cims, there are certain metrics that can tell us the current state of Cities Skylines 2. The big economic patch is one. The retailer follow-up patch is another. But as Colossal Order transforms money, wages, roundabouts, and service buildings into its city management suite, perhaps the most telling is the surge in positive reviews for Cities Skylines 2 on Steam.

The last two updates to Cities Skylines 2 (the economic patch was transformative; the retail patch brought new free service buildings, as well as fixes for bugs related to salaries and money) bring the city-building game closer to what we expected and hoped for in October 2023. Cities Skylines 2 mods can still have a big impact on improving your game, but Colossal Order’s official improvements – the foundation reinforcements – are what’s most important. Finally, the developer’s efforts seem to be having a tangible effect.

Looking at Steam data from Wednesday, July 3rd, when Colossal Order released full ratings for the retail patch, we see a sudden and sharp increase in positive player reviews for Cities Skylines 2. Over the past month, the highest number of positive reviews in a single day was 32: on July 3rd, there were 78 positive reviews for CS2.

The game still has a “mixed” overall rating on Valve’s store, but there are other signs that fans are changing their opinion. According to Steam Charts, in June, the month Colossal Order launched its big economic patch, Cities Skylines 2’s average player count increased by over 17%.

“Cities Skylines 2 is finally becoming the game we wanted it to be,” wrote one player on Steam today, Thursday, July 4. “Sure, it was a disaster at launch and some content is still unavailable, but it’s getting better. Colossal Order and Paradox are slowly but surely delivering.”

“This game got off to a slow and terrible start, and we shouldn’t really forgive CO for that,” wrote another player. “But the game is just a few updates away from becoming a true successor to the Cities Skylines we all love, and the future of the game looks bright.”
