Cisco brings together quantum network architecture

For decades, discussions on quantum computers are similar to family holidays, with someone in the rear seat asking constantly “are we still there?” And like these long records, the answer has generally been “not yet, but soon”, “soon” doing a lot of work in the answer.

That said, the atmosphere around technology seems relatively different these days, with significant steps apparently each week towards the creation of a useful quantum system tolerant to breakdowns. In a few months during the winter, Google, Amazon and Microsoft’s web services all released quantum chips that moved the needle to resolve the critical error correction challenge, with Microsoft proclaiming that its Majorana processor means that reliable quantum computers are years rather than decades.

Nvidia is flexing its AI muscle in the quantum field, called a catalyst and technology facilitator, and D-Wave began to sell its quantum reception systems-passing beyond the simple layout of the technology available via a system of advantage on its cloud service.

And successes continue to come. Researchers from the MIT Quantum Systems group announced this month a new superconductive circuit – called a “quarter coupler” – which will allow a quantum processor to run quickly enough to execute errors before fragile qubits start to decohé. Meanwhile, Google quantum researchers call for collaboration between industry players and university establishments to treat the equipment and integration obstacles.

The tangled chip

Now Cisco Systems this week unveils a quantum network entangled chip, a prototype developed with UC Santa Barbara that Vijoy Pandey, main vice-president of the supplier’s R&D unit, will indicate to the arrival of “impacted” quantum calculation applications.

At the same time, the networking giant opens its Cisco Quantum Labs in Santa Monica, California.

The tangled chip adds to the during the discussion during what quantum computers will look like when it will finally arrive in its entirety. Quantum -type quantum systems on photos seem impressive, but quantum computer science will probably be done in a distributed way and similar to a cloud, with smaller systems connected via quantum networks that allow easier scalability, as shown today with conventional computers.

In a blog article, Cisco’s Pandey noted that the challenge that industry is confronted with is that, although quantum applications require millions of qubits, today’s quantum systems include dozens or hundreds, with many roadmaps, see that meeting in thousands by the end of the decade.

“Decades ago, classic IT was faced with similar challenges until we started to connect smaller nodes together through networking infrastructure to create powerful systems distributed in data centers and cloud computing,” he wrote. “Like the use of large classic monolithic computer systems has been gradually progressive, the future of the quantum does not reside in a single monolithic quantum computer. Quantum data centers on scale, where processors work together through specialized networking, will be the practical and achievable path. ”

A quantum network is necessary

It will take a quantum network infrastructure to link to the creation of a possible quantum calculation environment possible and allow it to extend more quickly beyond the relatively low number of qubits found in current and close systems, Cisco Scientists wrote in a research document.

These quantum data centers involve “multiple QPUs (quantum processing units) … in a network, allowing distributed architecture which can evolve to meet the requirements of large-scale quantum computer science”, they wrote. “In the end, these quantum data centers will form the backbone of a global quantum network, or quantum Internet, facilitating transparent interconnectivity on a planetary scale.”

The quantum network entanglement chip is fundamental to building this data center. The entanglement is essential to quantum computer because it allows pairs of qubits – in the case of Cisco, photons – to remain connected even if they are separated over large distances, which cannot be done with conventional bits and makes quantum systems so much more powerful than conventional machines.

Pairs of photons

According to Ramana Kompella, Head of Cisco Research and Distinguished Engineer, and Reza Nejabati, Head of Quantum Research and Quantum Labs, The Chip Prototype Ustes Spontaneous Four-Wave Mixing In III-V Semiconductor Waveguides-A Process for Entangling Photon Peirs-On Silicon Wafer Platform, Creating More Than a Million USABLE TURAGLED Photon peers per second per channel, or up to 200 million peers per second in the chip.

It also reaches 99 prior loyalty and effectively, consuming less than 1 milliwatt (MW) of power, and can do it at room temperature without requiring specialized cooling technologies, which makes the chip useful for modern data centers. The researchers were also able to “create tables of tangle sources on the same chip for massive multiplexing for quantum networking from start to finish at high and multi-user, which makes it the most brilliant chip scale today,” wrote Kompella and Nejabati.

It can also be integrated into the existing fiber infrastructure, which makes it usable in current environments.

Switzers and Nicks

The tangled chip will be at the heart of an entire quantum data center to which the supplier works, with new versions of what is in current classic networks, including switches and NICS.

“A quantum network requires fundamentally new components that work in terms of quantum mechanics,” they wrote. “During the construction of a quantum network, we cannot digitize information as in conventional networks – we must preserve quantum properties throughout the entire transmission path.

The design of the quantum switch includes wave guides to transport quantum without measuring or observing them, which could introduce noise, light, vibrations or other environmental factors that could separate fragile quantum states. The Nic Quantum, which will be the agnostic suppliers, will connect quantum chips to the network, while quantum algorithms of the distributed compiler share the processes between the processes and plan the distribution of the tangle.

Cisco develops other components for a quantum networking battery, according to Pandey, tangle distribution protocols at the quantum network development kit (QNDK).

This development of hardware and software is a key element in Cisco’s strategy, allowing the company to understand how components work together to create a network environment, he wrote.

“While Some Companies Focus Solely on One One Type of Quantum Computing Technology (Superconducting, Ion Trap, Or Neutral Atom-Based Systems), Cisco is building a Vendor-Agnostic Framework that works with any quantum computing technology, pandey wrote, adding that A position to How Nvidia SEES ITSELF – As Enabler and Facilitator of Various Quantum TECHNOLOGIES RATHER Than a Vendor with a narrow view of the emerging industry.
