Cinema, TV: it’s filming in Brittany!

“Les Trois Mousquetaires” in Saint-Malo (35), “Plancha” in Névez (29), the next opus of the adventures of Commissioner Dupin soon in Concarneau (29)… Casting announcements are flourishing and shootings are linked in Brittany . Is the trend looking good for audiovisual production in the region? We asked a few professionals the question.

Help more movies

As for Bretagne cinema, the regional agency, Delphine Jouan, responsible for hosting the shoots (a service provided to any audiovisual production wishing to shoot in Brittany), confirms this impression. The pandemic and containment imposed a sudden halt, in March 2020, on all projects for two months. But activity quickly picked up. “The films that were ready started shooting, the TV channels needed content, and the Region’s aid fund was increased in 2019, which helped more films. “

There is a lot of work

It is also the sound of the bell that we hear from the technicians who work on the sets. Christophe Inizan is a carpenter and builds sets for filming. At the moment, it is in Saint-Malo, on the two feature films “The Three Musketeers”, that he is engaged. “There is a lot of activity! There are slack periods in this business, but this is not one of them, that’s for sure! “Among the possible explanations for this rebound:” There is the arrival of platforms, the cinema which resumes, all the series on the way: there is a lot of work.

More series and TV movies

Jean-Baptiste Gallou, painter and decorator, felt the same. For the professional, based in Carantec (29), “there was a big interruption during the first wave. When the second wave arrived, it was less difficult. And then, after the second wave, it started again. But with a few differences. “At my level, I have the feeling that there are a lot more series for television, a lot of TV films, and fewer feature films. “He also notes that” the covid has meant that filming in Eastern and European countries has been very severely limited. “

Tracking, general management … These professions have been taken by storm

Muriel Riou, actress and casting director, currently in retraining, noted, “a period of“ without ”, the year 2020 was very impacted, and it resumed quietly. “And then,” big landing of filming, to the point that there was a shortage of manpower. Tracking, general management… These professions have been taken by storm ”.

Mado Le Fur, both in charge of casting and stage manager, felt the period rollercoaster. She says: “I was filming when it suddenly stopped. When the shootings resumed, I did a lot of work last summer. And then I had a big hole for five months, where I had no shoot. But there it started again in March 2021. It is true that we are lucky to have had a lot of filming in Brittany this summer ”. With the impression that over the postponements linked to the crisis, all the projects materialize at the same time. She also notes: “We have more TV films and series this year than in the past”.

About thirty shoots in 2021

“In 2020, despite the two months of confinement, the number of days of filming is as high as in 2019, account Delphine Jouan. And the year 2021 promises to be just as good. In any case, the first semester was rich. Between January and June, Bretagne Cinéma supported the shooting of five feature films, eight television dramas and eight short films. Three feature films, four TV projects (series and single) and four short films are already in progress or to come for the second part of the year. Good filming health which is not enough to allay the concerns of professionals about the difficulties encountered by the cinema, between the closing of theaters, uncertainties about release dates and more cautious funding.
