Chrome address bar gets Material You redesign on tablets

Google is rolling out a number of Chrome 126 updates to Android and iOS, including a Material You redesign of the address bar on tablets.

Previously, the address bar took up your entire screen going from one edge to the other. The redesign simply makes it a column with rounded corners so that the “website is still visible below the dropdown in case you decide to return to it.” This Material You address bar is now available for Chrome on Android tablets and iPad.

Sticking to the address bar, Chrome Actions already lets you quickly open Settings and access other parts of the browser. They now appear in local business listings that appear in online search results. With a restaurant, you can see shortcuts for calling, getting directions, and reading reviews. This is available on Android today and on iOS in the fall.

Another type of shortcut will bring up websites you frequently access when searching:

For example, you may usually type “times” to see the City Metro schedule, because that word is part of the site’s description. With this new feature, City Metro will now appear higher in your search suggestions when you search for “timetable.”

The latest address bar update adds trending search suggestions to Chrome for iOS. They appear from the New Tab page.

Today’s latest update adds live sports cards to Chrome’s New Tab Page Discover feed on Android and iOS.
