When launched next summer, the adaptation of Christopher Nolan of the Greek epic Odyssey Will be historic in more ways than one: it will be the first feature film never completely shot on Imax Film.
Odyssey is not the first film to be filmed entirely using the IMAX equipment – this honor belongs Avengers: War Infinity – But it is the first to do it while turning on the film rather than digital. The IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond, announced the news on Thursday at a press lunch as part of the Cannes Film Festival, revealing that he started as a challenge by Nolan.
“Chris called me and said to me,” If you can understand how to solve the problems, I will do (Odyssey) 100% in IMAX. And that’s what we do, “said Gelfond The Hollywood Reporter. “He forced us to rethink this side of our company, our cinema recorders, our cinema cameras.”
The new cameras would be both lighter and 30% quieter. Gelfond says that the company has also developed new movie digitization and processing techniques to make more and easier to look back. For the moment, the new cameras are exclusive to Nolan, but will be available for other directors after Odyssey Envelops production.
Nolan has been one of IMAX’s greatest supporters since he used the cameras to shoot The black knightAction scenes in 2008. He used IMAX cameras in each film since, with 2023 Oppenheimer The first film to use a black and white film in IMAX, which required both the modification of IMAX cameras and the development of new films with Kodak. The director of photography of this film, Hoyte Van Hoytema, is also drawing Odyssey.
