Christina Applegate Shares What She Wants to Do With Her Remaining Days Amid Multiple Sclerosis Battle

Before her diagnosis, Sadie recalled, school staff would attribute her symptoms to anxiety or assume she was lying. She said people who downplayed her condition hurt her physically and emotionally, as her feelings were ignored and she was asked to swim laps in gym class.

During their conversation, Applegate compared Sadie’s experience to what she and Jamie endure when the stresses of the world make their MS symptoms much more severe than they would be at home.

Although they both have to deal with difficult conditions, Sadie’s diagnosis helped her understand her mother’s daily experience.

“When my mom says, ‘Oh, I’m kind of in pain right now. Oh, I’ve got these tremors.’ If I didn’t have that, I’d probably say, ‘I don’t care, I don’t know what you’re talking about.’ But I actually have tremors from Porous Turner Syndrome,” Sadie said. “It’s definitely a lot easier to understand what she’s going through when I’m going through something myself.”

But that doesn’t take away from the challenges mother and daughter have faced since Applegate’s battle with multiple sclerosis began.

“When she was diagnosed, it felt like it wasn’t over, but it was hard to see my mom lose a lot of the skills she had when I was growing up,” Sadie said, recalling how they could dance together for hours.

Although Sadie said it was very difficult to watch her mother go through this ordeal, the teenager noted that it was nice to be able to help and support her through her diagnosis.

Meanwhile, for Applegate, guilt emerges on her bad MS days. “I never want you to think that I’m not capable of being your protector, your mother, you know, I love you,” she said.
