Chris Pine Opens Up About Losing ‘The OC’ Role Due to ‘Bad Acne’

Chris Pine talks about not landing Ryan Atwood’s role in The CO because of her severe acne at the time.

In Welcome to The OC: An Oral Historyreleased in honor of the series’ 20th anniversary, casting director Patrick Rush revealed that the Star Trek The star didn’t get the lead role on the Fox show because of her skin issues.

During an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast before the release of Pine’s first film, Pool man, host Josh Horowitz asked him if bringing up how he lost the role because of his acne was post-traumatic stress disorder or a sour spot for him.

“No, I mean, it’s part of my life. Look, do I wish…? The man didn’t need to talk about it. I mean, that’s his prerogative,” the Wonder Woman said the star. “I had terrible skin when I was a teenager, then after college my skin started breaking out again. I was going out to The CO, which is a melodrama for teenagers. I can understand that they wanted pretty people doing pretty things, and bad acne isn’t the key (to that).

When the host joked that it was a shame the actor didn’t get the role because maybe his career would have worked out if he had, Pine responded, “I don’t want to not say, ‘I’m grateful I didn’t get the part.’ I’m fine, but it’s a bit PTSD,” he added. “It’s no fun having bad skin… It was one of the most traumatic times of my life. , but that’s my story, man.

The role of Ryan Atwood ended up going to Ben McKenzie, who starred alongside Mischa Barton, Adam Brody, Rachel Bilson, Peter Gallagher, Kelly Rowan, Melinda Clarke, Tate Donovan and Alan Dale, with Chris Pratt and Olivia Wilde in recurring roles.

Later in the conversation with Horowitz, Pine explained how difficult it was for him to have such severe acne growing up, noting that it took an emotional toll on him.

“It’s so strange. People talk about obesity – and, obviously, I understand the difficulty of that – or they talk about all kinds of things, and I feel like acne is considered something like, ‘Oh, that’s just like, what you experience as a teenager.’ And it can be,” he said “And it can be a bit like having a pimple on your forehead. It can also be extremely debilitating and really, seriously, emotionally debilitating, which was for it. Me.

He concluded: “So for anyone going through this: I understand you, I hear you, I’ve been there, I know. I know how depressing it can be and the depth of grief it can take you, but there is a better day.

Pine directed, starred in and co-wrote Pool man, which follows his character, Darren Barrenman, a Los Angeles pool cleaner who spends his days taking care of the pool at the Tahitian Tiki building. One day he is approached by a femme fatale to uncover the corruption and agrees in an effort to make his hometown a better place to live.

Pool man is in theaters now.
