China’s bid to join TPP trade group puts members in awkward position

TOKYO — Ten years ago, it was a US-run business club seeking to limit the influence of the Chinese economic model. Now Washington is out of the Trans-Pacific Partnership and Beijing wants to join it, as the most important member of the group.

This led to delicate talks between the US allies leading the TPP on Friday, a day after Beijing submitted its membership application. Members said everyone was welcome to apply, but some said the newcomer might not be a good candidate for the club.
