A senior Chinese official said on Thursday that the United States should have “no illusions” about Taiwan and reiterated that Beijing will not compromise on the issue, according to a report.

Wu Qian, a spokesman for the Chinese Defense Ministry, held a press briefing and accused the United States of saying “a lot of irresponsible things” about it, Reuters reported.

Beijing has angered its neighbors and Western governments with an increasingly assertive foreign and military policy. Taiwan and the mainland have been governed separately since 1949 following a civil war.


The Biden administration was condemned by China on Wednesday after the State Department announced it had invited Taiwan to its democracy summit next month.
