Bejing is launching cold water on the hopes of President Donald Trump to reduce tensions between the two biggest economies in the world, whose trade war has disrupted world markets.
Trump told journalists on Wednesday that both parties were talking “actively”. A spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry said on Thursday, the conversations had not yet started.
“None of this is true,” said spokesman Guo Jiakun during journalists at the daily press conference of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. “For everything I know, China and the United States have no consultation or negotiations on prices, even less reached an agreement.”
Wall Street responded positively on Wednesday after the Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Trump raised the prospects for an agreement. The Wall Street Journal reported that the White House was planning to defuse by reducing certain prices.
Bessent said there was “an opportunity for a big deal”.
Trump said on Tuesday that the prices on Chinese goods descend “considerably” by 145%, which the White House imposed after Beijing slapped the prices of reprisals on American products after the President “Day Day” of the president.
According to CNBC, a separate Chinese official also said that there were no ongoing talks.
“Currently, there is absolutely no negotiations on the economy and trade between China and the United States,” the journalists of the Ministry of Commerce told journalists. His remarks were originally in Mandarin and were translated by financial publication.
The White House did not immediately respond to the request for comments from Business Insider.
