Chicago’s protections for felons and gang members ensure no illegal criminal aliens are handed over to the federal government

The Sanctuary City of Chicago is turning over no illegal aliens to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for arrest and deportation, thanks in part to Mayor Lori Lightfoot (D) protections for gang members and criminals.
As of the third quarter of 2022, city records show that none of the three ICE detainees filed with Chicago police — seeking custody as illegal criminal aliens — have been honored. It is likely that hundreds, if not thousands, of other illegal aliens were arrested in Chicago during the period, but ICE agents were limited in rescuing detainees by the Biden administration.
The refusal to honor ICE detainees by Chicago officials is the result of Lightfoot’s expanded sanctuary city policy.
In February 2021, Lightfoot signed the extension that prohibited local police from cooperating with ICE even in cases where arrested illegal aliens are on the gang database, are convicted felons, have criminal charges pending. current or have current mandates.
Lightfoot’s expansion came after former mayor Rahm Emanuel (D) signed Chicago’s original sanctuary city policy in 2012, which prohibited police from questioning suspects about their immigration status.
Emanuel’s Sanctuary City policy was later expanded in 2016 to require “city employees to treat documented and undocumented immigrants with respect and dignity.”
