Chicago Sun-Times publishes invented books and false experts in the IA debacle

The May 18 issue of Chicago Sun-Totes Includes dozens of recommended summer activity pages: new trends, outdoor activities and books to read. But some of the recommendations indicate that false books, generated by AI and other articles cite and cite people who do not seem to exist.

Alongside real books like Call me by name By AndrĂ© Aciman, a summer reading list presents false titles by real authors. Min Jin Lee is a real rented novelist – but “Nightshade Market”, “a captivating tale taking place in the underground economy of Seoul”, this is not one of his works. Rebecca Makkai, a local from Chicago, is credited for a false book entitled “Bail Point” which, according to the article, concerns a climatologist whose teenage girl turns against her.

In a post on Bluesky, the Sun said he “examined how it was printed”, noting that he was not editorial content and was not created or approved by the editorial room. Victor Lim, principal director of audience development, added an email to The penis That “it is unacceptable that any content we provide to our readers is inaccurate”, saying that more information will be provided soon.

It is not clear if the content is sponsored – the cover page of the section carries the Sun The logo and simply calls it “your guide for the best of summer”. In a declaration published on the newspaper website, the Sun said that the section was “under license of a national content partner”, which 404 media identified as Conglomerate of the Hearst media. THE Sun said he deleted the digital edition section and updated his policies so that the third -party content meets the newspaper standards and is more clearly identified.

The list of books appears without signature, but a writer named Marco Buscaglia is credited for other parts of the summer guide. Buscaglia’s reports appear on a history on the culture of hammocks in the United States which cites several experts and publications, some of which do not seem to be real. It refers to a 2023 Out Article from Brianna Madia magazine, a real author and blogger, which I could not find. The part also quotes an “analysis of the outdoor industry market” by Eagles Nest Outfitters that I could not find online. “Dr. Jennifer Campos, professor of leisure studies at the University of Colorado”, which does not seem to exist. Buscaglia did not immediately respond to a request for comments but admitted to 404 media May he use the “for sometimes history” and always check the equipment.

“This time, I did not do it and I cannot believe that I missed it because it is so obvious. No excuses,” he said 404. “On me 100% and I am completely embarrassed.”

Another unbeaned article entitled “Summer food trends” presents apparently similar similar experts, including a “Dr Catherine Furst, food anthropologist at Cornell University”. Padma Lakshmi is also attributed in the room for a quote that she does not seem to have said.

The media have repeatedly executed content generated by AI next to their real journalism, often blaming the problem on third -party content creators. High level content incidents generated by AI to Gannett And Illustrated sports raised questions about the editorial process and, in both cases, a third -party marketing company was at the origin of AI sludge. The defense of information rooms is generally that they had nothing to do with the content – but the appearance of work generated by AI alongside Real Reporting and writing by human employees in damage.
