Emma Hayes’ side led through an Aggie Beever-Jones header in the ninth minute – in injured Lauren James’ side – before Liverpool turned things around thanks to Sophie Roman Haug’s effort in the 51st minute and Gemma Bonner midway through the second half.

A chaotic finale then saw Beever-Jones score her second goal ten minutes from normal time before substitute Leanne Kiernan restored the hosts’ lead a minute later.

Teagan Micah’s own goal brought things level two minutes later, but Bonner headed home the winner in stoppage time.

Manager Emma Hayes’ reaction summed it up, as she put her head in her hands as the winner entered.

With three matches remaining, the west London side – WSL champions for each of the last four years – are six points behind City, who have two matches remaining.

Back in March, Chelsea were aiming for a quadruple, but now find themselves facing the very real prospect of finishing trophyless.

This will be the first time Hayes has had a trophyless season since the 2018/19 campaign.

Chelsea’s players looked devastated at the final whistle, knowing they may have just wasted their chance of winning the title.
