Chelsea captain Reece James will miss the start of next season after a “stupid” red card just 19 minutes after coming on.

Reece James may finally be fully fit, but he will still miss the start of next season due to suspension.

The Chelsea captain was shown a straight red card during Wednesday night’s 2-1 win at Brighton for sending off Joao Pedro.

Just 19 minutes after coming off the bench, the right-back, whose season is now over after just nine Premier League matches, was sent off in the final stages at the Amex Stadium.

The 24-year-old reacted angrily to a challenge from Pedro, where he then kicked the Brazilian out from the ground.

Referee Michael Salisbury was called to the pitch monitor following the VAR intervention, where he brandished James with a straight red card.

And with James already receiving a red card in the 4-1 defeat at Newcastle earlier in the season, he will now miss four matches.

This will see him ruled out of the final Premier League clash of the campaign against Bournemouth on Sunday, and the top three next season.

Chelsea fans were quick to express their anger on social media, with one X user speaking out: “Reece James, what a stupid, stupid boy, petulance at its finest.”

Another posted: “That’s fucking stupid of Reece James, there’s absolutely no point.”

A third added: “Embarrassing of Reece James. Absolutely no need to do that, ffs. »

This fan then sent a message: “This is ridiculous of Reece James. Inexcusable.”

And this angry Chelsea fan said: “That’s horrible from Reece James, a captain. He could have cost us the game.”

Meanwhile, one simply said: “Brain dead Reece James.”

James’ moment of madness threatened to see Chelsea lose all the points.

At the time of his sending off, Chelsea led 2-0 going into stoppage time, only for Danny Welbeck to halve the deficit in his absence.

The Seagulls failed to find an equalizer, with the Blues edging Newcastle into sixth place in the table.

And they could finish if they are fifth provided they beat the Cherries on Sunday and Tottenham lose at Sheffield United.
