Chelsea address viral Conor Gallagher video and slam ‘completely unacceptable’ abuse

Chelsea have condemned abuse aimed at Conor Gallagher following Saturday’s 2-2 draw against Burnley.

Before the standoff at Stamford Bridge, the 24-year-old was accused of ignoring a mascot in a clip that went viral.

This is despite the midfielder being seen with his arm around the youngster as he prepared to go out onto the pitch.

Nonetheless, he received heavy criticism from his fans, who flooded his social media comments with insults.

An official statement from the Blues read: “Chelsea Football Club is aware of a video clip circulating on social media from Saturday’s match against Burnley, which has been significantly taken out of context.

“The level of abuse and defamatory comments that have followed against Conor Gallagher are completely unacceptable.

“We pride ourselves on being a diverse and inclusive club where people from all cultures, communities and identities feel welcome.”

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino also addressed the video during his press conference on Wednesday.

Pochettino said: “It upset me so much because no one wants to do something like that with that intention. He did very well with the two mascots and when you are there, playing football, concentrating on a lot of things, at the start of a match, sometimes this can happen.

“But people try to find things like that to make a mess. I know Conor, come on, he never had that intention. Conor is a great kid who cares about everything. I hate people who use networks social people to abuse like that. it’s so easy (for them).”
