The NFL has opened the doors of its stars to participate in the Olympic Games. Kansas City leaders must make sure that Patrick Mahomes are not one of them.
On Wednesday, the initiate of the NFL, Tom Pelisero, reported that the League owners would discuss a resolution during the next spring meetings that would allow players to participate in the 2028 summer Olympic Games in Football Flag. With the games that should take place in Los Angeles, the NFL clearly wants its brightest stars at the front and center when sport makes its Olympic debut.
But for the chefs, the conversation should stop at a very obvious border: the participation of Patrick Mahomes.
The idea of watching Mahomes playing football flag on a world scene could make a viral moment or two. It would also be good for the NFL brand while the League continues to bring into new international territories. That said, the idea of having a quarter of a team from a team risked injury in an exhibition devoid of meaning is too much to take.
Chiefs must keep a tight trace in all the hopes of Mahomas to play the Olympic Games.
Chiefs already have / in any way. In 2019, the director general of the Chiefs, Brett Veach, made a pleasant reference on the limitation of Mahomes activities – in particular to prohibit him from playing basketball. “As soon as I saw (a video of Mahomes playing), it probably took me two seconds to call his agent,” said Veach on Radio 810 sports. “It was a great non-no.”
Later, Veach confirmed that the conversation with Mahomes was lighter than disciplinary, saying: “Hey guy, you break a lot of ankles there. Just make sure you don’t break you.”
But there is real in what Veach even said in 2019. Although it is impossible to predict whether a player will injure himself or not, there is at least something to say to protect your most precious assets. For the chefs, it is undoubtedly Mahomes.
In fact, the issues are different for Mahomes than for anyone in this conversation. It is not only the face of the franchise but of the whole league. His health dictates not only the success of the first franchise in the league, but the NFL itself is based strongly on the capacities, the charisma and the personality of Mahomas.
Despite what the participation of Mahomas could mean for certain Olympic hopes for the United States, there are much more important priorities than a gold medal. It is a continuous prosecution to accumulate as many Lombardi trophies for chiefs as possible.
