Check out the incredible proof that West Coast kid Harley Reid really is the new and improved Dustin Martin.

  • Incredible stat shows Reid is the new Martin
  • Martin holds the record for most broken tackles
  • Reid is on pace to surpass that this season

Harley Reid, the West Coast’s No. 1 draft pick, has had an explosive start to 2024, drawing numerous comparisons to his superstar idol Dustin Martin – now there’s proof of their similarity.

Martin currently holds the record for the most tackles broken in a season, with an incredible 83 during his 2017 season at Brownlow.

Reid, who is only 19 years old, leads Martin at the same part of the season, with 29 broken tackles.

Reid once again sent social media into meltdown on Sunday with a series of riveting highlights during West Coast’s shock 16.9 (105) to 10.10 (70) win over Melbourne.

The No. 1 draft pick produced a goal-of-the-year contender when he burned Christian Petracca on a central clearance with three rebounds before firing a true shot from 45 yards out.

Harley Reid is on track to beat Martin’s incredible broken tackle stats at the rate he’s going

Reid sent the crowd wild again in the third quarter when he produced a double defense – using his left hand to shake off Clayton Oliver before using his right hand to tame Petracca.

The rising star favorite produced another standout moment later in the season when he pushed aside his opponent and collected the bouncing ball with one hand before sprinting forward to score his second goal.

Reid was labeled a future superstar in the mold of Richmond great Dustin Martin before he was even drafted.

The hype has only grown, but West Coast coach Adam Simpson is doing his best to keep things under control.

“He’s carrying a heavy weight right now,” Simpson said.

“I really try to be careful about the attention he gets.

“But when he plays like that – it looked like he had fun tonight, and that’s our goal for him – to enjoy being an AFL player.

“When he appreciates the game for what it is and plays to its strengths, then we are all happy.

“And if he plays well, we’ll accept it, but if he doesn’t, that’s okay too.” He is 19 years old.

Reid’s arrival played a huge role in reconnecting West Coast fans with the team after two torrid years.

Simpson can feel the buzz, and other players feed off that energy, too.

“We try to connect with this crowd as much as possible, and I think that’s a real advantage,” Simpson said.

“Harley is obviously the new toy, he’s quite nice to play with.”

Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin was full of praise for Reid.

“He’s clearly an incredibly exciting player and I can understand why there’s so much hype around him,” Goodwin said.

“He’s so dynamic and he can score the scoreboard.

“We had plans as to what we wanted to do with him.

“But once you put him in space in a shutdown situation where there’s space, he’s incredibly talented, he’s fast and powerful, and he gets the ball into space.”

“He’s someone we haven’t managed well and I’m sure a lot of clubs are looking at how they can manage him best.”

West Coast have a chance of getting midfielder Elliot Yeo back for Sunday’s clash with the Crows at Adelaide Oval.
