Cesar Azpilicueta called ‘lucky’ to be at Chelsea at ‘right time’ as Neil Warnock says Blues captain ‘not a good defender’ despite incredible trophy haul

Cesar Azpilicueta has won every major trophy he can win at Chelsea but Neil Warnock believes the defender was ‘lucky’ to have the career he has had.

The Spaniard has been an outstanding servant for the Blues since joining from Marseille for £7million in 2012.

The Spaniard also won the Premier League, Champions League, Europa League, FA Cup and League Cup at Chelsea.

On Saturday he achieved a feat that even John Terry, Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba failed to achieve.

With the Club World Cup triumph over Palmeiras, the 32-year-old became the first Chelsea player to win a full major trophy sweep, adding that piece of silverware to their Premier League, Champions League title , Europa League, European Super Cup, FA Cup and League Cup.

If he can win the Community Shield – the Premier League curtain-raiser which is played between the title winners and the FA Cup holders – Azpilicueta will have lifted all the trophies available to win at the club.

The Chelsea captain, who is the club’s longest-serving player, couldn’t realize his feat sooner, but Corinthians beat the Blues to the title in 2012 after their first Champions League victory the same year.

Nonetheless, despite his scintillating trophy collection, Warnock boldly asserted that Azpilicueta ‘is not a good defender’ and was blessed with his career thanks to the Chelsea teams he was in.

“It goes both ways. I think he was very lucky to be at a club like Chelsea,” he told talkSPORT Breakfast.

Warnock had a long and successful managerial career but this opinion is controversial

“I don’t think he’s a great defender. Sometimes in football you need a bit of luck and I think he was a bit lucky to have been there at the right time and in the right place.

“That’s what you need in football. You need a bit of luck to be successful.”

Azpilicueta’s ten-year spell at Chelsea could come to an end this summer as his contract expires in west London.

The Spaniard is said to be one of Barcelona’s top targets with Xavi Hernandez keen to bring his compatriot to Camp Nou ahead of the 2022/23 season.
