Celine Dion ‘almost died’ from stiff person syndrome

Celine Dion’s battle with stiff person syndrome was apparently more serious than we thought. In an upcoming interview with Hoda Kotb, the Grammy winner, who was diagnosed with a neurological disorder in 2022, revealed that the illness almost killed her.

On Thursday, Kotb revealed details of his meeting with the singer on Today with Hoda and Jenna, telling her co-host about the lowest point of Dion’s health journey. “Celine Dion at one point — she’s doing a lot better now — but, at one point, she almost died, which she says, and it was a scary time,” Kotb said, reiterating: “It was a scary time.”

She continued: “She was diagnosed with a terrible illness and, at one point, she wondered if she was going to make it, if she was going to make it.”

Teasing that her conversation with Dion – which aired on NBC on June 11 – was “very emotional,” Kotb concluded on an optimistic note, adding: “We’ll see where she is on her journey home, but I know people. we encourage it.”

Dion’s battle with stiff person syndrome, which affected her voice, is explored in the Prime Video documentary, I am: Celine Dion. “I was diagnosed with a very rare neurological disorder,” she says in the film’s heartbreaking trailer. “And I wasn’t ready to say anything before. But I’m ready now.”

Sharing that the hardest part of the illness is being unable to perform, Dion said: “It’s not hard to do a show now, it’s hard to cancel a show. I work hard every day , but I have to admit it’s been a struggle. I miss people so much. If I can’t run, I won’t walk.

I am: Celine Dion premieres on Prime Video June 25.
