Vice President Kamala Harris raised a staggering $361 million in August, her campaign announced Friday morning, in what she billed as “the biggest haul of the 2024 cycle.”
The Democratic presidential candidate’s fundraising haul was nearly triple the $130 million that Donald Trump’s campaign announced Wednesday and that the former president raised last month.
Harris has seen a surge in fundraising in the nearly seven weeks since she replaced President Biden as the Democratic leader of the 2024 ticket.

The vice president’s campaign noted that Harris has raised more than $615 million in fundraising since July 21, when Biden, in a blockbuster ad, ended his reelection campaign and endorsed his running mate.
Harris’ campaign also touted August’s haul as “the best month of grassroots fundraising in presidential history.”
The vice president’s team also showed off what it called a “massive war chest,” reporting $404 million in cash as of the end of last month. That’s more than $100 million more than the $295 million the Trump campaign said it had on hand.

Harris’ August haul was up from the $310 million the Democratic ticket raised in July, while Trump’s fundraising last month was slightly below the $138.7 million he raised in July.
“In a short time, Vice President Harris’ candidacy has galvanized a historic, broad and diverse coalition – with the kind of enthusiasm, energy and courage that wins close elections,” Julie Chavez Rodriguez, Harris’ campaign manager, said in a statement. “As we enter the final stretch of this election, we are ensuring that every hard-earned dollar goes to the voters who will decide this election.”

The former president’s campaign, in a statement revealing its fundraising numbers, said Wednesday that its available cash provides “the resources needed to propel President Trump’s campaign to victory.”
The Biden campaign and the Democratic National Committee enjoyed a funding lead over Trump and the Republican National Committee earlier this year. But Trump and the RNC outraised Biden and the DNC by $331 million to $264 million in the second quarter from April to June 2024.

Biden enjoyed a brief fundraising boost after his disastrous performance in his late June debate with Trump, with donors briefly shelling out big bucks in support of the 81-year-old president.

But Biden’s halting, halting debate speech also immediately fueled questions about his physical and mental fitness to last four more years in the White House — and sparked growing calls within his own party for the president to end his bid for a second term. That brief fundraising surge didn’t last, and by early July had begun to slow considerably.
Fundraising, like polling, is a key indicator of campaign politics and measures a candidate’s popularity and the strength of their campaign. Funds raised can be used to, among other things, hire staff, expand voter outreach and mobilization efforts, fund the production and distribution of television, radio, digital and mail ads, and for candidate travel.
