After years of cascaders largely neglected by the Academy of Arts and Cinema Sciences, the Oscars are about to add a new category. Today, the Academy has announced that it intended to start distributing icar statues for cascaders from films released in 2027 for the 100th anniversary of the award ceremony.
“Since the first days of cinema, the design of the waterfalls has been an integral part of the cinema,” said the CEO of the Academy, Bill Kramer and the president of the Academy, Janet Yang, in a press release on the new category. “We are proud to honor the innovative work of these technical and creative artists, and we congratulate them for their commitment and their dedication to reach this important opportunity.”
The Academy has not yet announced any other eligibility rule for the films which will be nominated in the new category. “The details of the award ceremony will be determined by the Council of Governors of the Academy and executive leaders on a future date,” according to the press release from the Academy.
Although more than 100 stunt workers are currently members of the Academy’s production and technology branch, as The Hollywood Reporter Note, the organization has never given only two Oscars (fees) to the cascaders. Now that the new category has been established, we will probably start to see studios put much more emphasis on the sets defying the death of their projects.
